50 Most Remote and Beautiful Places in the World
Most of us have been back at work a couple of months now and are probably already over it and dreaming about being far away on a deserted island somewhere - away from everything and everyone - ‘away from the madding crowd’ so to speak.
Luckily the global travel company Big 7 Travel has just released their list for the 50 most remote and beautiful places in the world.
You may remember we covered their somewhat controversial report in a previous blog The 50 Most Instagrammable Destinations in the World 2023 , and at the time somewhat disagreed with Milan being in the #1 spot. However, having been there in the last few weeks- I may rethink that judgement! There were certainly a lot of instagrammers there, AND it was stunning!
This is the complete opposite - supposedly not an instagrammer to be found, and not many other people either for that matter- so if you are looking for that real escape- this could be the list for you.
So how remote are these places? Well according to the list Macquarie Island in Australia is #3 on the list which raised my curiosity being Australian born and bred and not familiar at all with the name.
Apparently, in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica, this UNESCO World Heritage site (you know I love a UNESCO!) and pristine nature reserve is approximately 1500 km from Tasmania and about halfway between Australia and Antartica. It has no permanent human inhabitants, so yes it is remote. It is just 34km long and 5 km wide. Only accessible by sea, politically, it is managed by Tasmania and regionally it's part of Oceania. If you’re curious as to why exactly this tiny island close to New Zealand is not, in fact, part of New Zealand, the answer is that Tassie and NZ had a fight over who got to exploit the island’s huge penguin population for oil in the 1900s’ and Tassie won. Classic.
So a quick whip around to friends and family and workmates confirmed that NONE of them had heard of this place and only about 50% of the others on the list! So if you haven’t heard of this one, you’re not alone. So that confirms- yes they are pretty remote!
So as you sit and your desk and think you want to get away from everything and everyone, here are the top 10 at least to consider.
Blue Eye, Albania
White Desert Whichaway Camp, Antarctica
Macquarie Island, Australia
Laya, Bhutan
